About Membership

The Sherlock Holmes Society of London welcomes new members. Since our foundation in 1951 (and we’ll be celebrating our 75^th birthday in 2026) we have gathered members from all around the world who are interested in the life and works of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Members of the Society receive hard copies of our twice-yearly Sherlock Holmes Journal, containing scholarly articles as well as Society news, and our monthly email newsletter, the District Messenger, which gives news of events and publications relevant to those interested in Sherlock Holmes.

We have several meetings during the course of the year, which in January begins with our annual dinner, traditionally held in the House of Commons, followed by lunch the morning after. We have lectures and a film evening each year, while in May we celebrate a London weekend, with a variety of events that make a trip to the capital particularly worthwhile. In autumn each year we arrange a residential weekend visit to a UK location with canonical connections; recent visits have been to Dartmoor, Oxford and Harwich. And we occasionally have a major expedition (we call them pilgrimages!) abroad; in 2025 we will be visiting India.

We have recently also introduced internet-based meetings – useful for those who can’t get to London, where most of our meetings are held – with groups such as The Well Readed League, which studies Holmes and Holmes-related fiction.

You can join as a Full Member, but we also encourage younger people to join (interest in Sherlock Holmes often begins quite young!) and so offer Junior Membership to those under 18 years old. We also offer Joint Membership; this suits a couple living at the same address both of whom will enjoy all the benefits of membership except that they will receive only one copy of each edition of the Sherlock Holmes Journal.

The annual costs of membership depend on where you live (because of the cost of postage of the Journal) and the category of membership. These are currently:
