THE NORWOOD REBUILDERS 

The Society’s Film Evening will be held on Thursday 8^th October 2026 at The National Liberal Club, at 1, Whitehall Place, London, SW1, at 6.00 for 6.45pm.    The National Liberal Club is located on the corner of Whitehall Place and the Victoria Embankment, not far from Embankment Underground Station, and also conveniently placed for Charing Cross main line station.  It is usually possible to find a parking space in the vicinity at this time in the evening – although you may have to pay the congestion charge.

Please note: As is our usual practice, both the dinner and the film show will be in the David Lloyd George Room on the first floor, opposite the staircase.  However, the cash bar before the meeting will now also be in the David Lloyd George Room and will remain open during and after the meeting.  Only members of the National Liberal Club will be able to use the main bar and Smoking Room.

Society members and their guests may opt the film show for £15.00 per head or also to dine beforehand at a cost of £49.00 per head.  The meeting and dining charge includes VAT and service but not drinks, which must be paid for on the night.  For those who choose to dine, the meal will comprise two courses, tea or coffee: Roasted Kent Raised Lamb Rump, minted lamb bon bon, celeriac purée boulangère potatoes, spinach & claret jus OR Black Truffle Potato Gnocchi, caramelised red onion, wild mushroom, celery & parsley salsa followed by Amaretto Parfait, caramel poached pears, pear gel, maple jelly & almond brittle.  Please advise any dietary requirements when booking.

Dinner will be served promptly at 6.45pm and will be followed by the meeting and film show from around 8pm.  The meeting should finish around 10pm.

Before we show the films, however, we have something of a special event.  Earlier in the year as part of the 75th anniversary programme we held a short story writing competition for young people.  After the meal but before the film commences, we will be presenting the winners of the short story competition with their prizes.  We hope to have as many of the young authors present as possible, either in person or virtually, and the publication available to purchase in due course.

Turning to the films, our expert host will be Matthew J. Elliott, making a much-anticipated return.  Matthew is a member of the Society and the writer of the long-running American radio series, The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

We’re very happy to be back at the National Liberal Club for this year’s event, which is entitled ‘The Norwood Rebuilders’, for reasons that are about to become obvious.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the British Film Institute, we will be screening three beautifully restored films starring Sir Arthur’s favourite Sherlock Holmes, Eille Norwood.  We’re also happy to have as a guest speaker Bryony Dixon, Curator in the BFI Archive, who played an integral part in the restoration of the Norwood films, many of which have gone unseen by the general public for close to a century.

To tie in with the Society’s forthcoming excursion to France, we will round off the evening with a recent French production depicting the investigations of Holms’ great-great granddaughter in modern-day Paris.

Applications for the meeting and dining should be made by 23^rd September.  Applications for the meetings only should be made no later than 2^nd October.

Anyone attending a Society function for the first time should bring along and display their yellow cards of introduction, so that we can identify them and introduce them to our members.  Please also note that applications are not normally acknowledged nor are tickets sent.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the night.  If an acknowledgement is required, please provide an e-mail address or a stamped, addressed envelope with your application.

The Society likes to keep a record of its activities, including photographs of our meetings which are published in the Journal and on the Society’s website/Facebook page.  If you do not want to appear in a Society photograph please avoid being in any posed photographs and advise one of the meeting organisers.
