From the Society’s first conception in 1951 Maurice Campbell was already one of us, giving of his counsel and promising a contact with the surviving members of the pre-war Society.

James Holroyd, O.B.E, was one of the mainsprings from which the new Society took off in 1951, following the Sherlock Holmes Exhibition in the Abbey National Building in Baker Street.

When the Sherlock Holmes Society of London was founded in 1951, Mr. Roberts (as he then was) was invited to be its first President, an office he filled until his death in 1966.

Paul Gore-Booth was an Irishman and the nephew of the distinguished poetess Eva Gore-Booth. He loved all the Canon and the crowded canvas of characters who appear in its pages.

Sitting at breakfast in the grand Hotel Victoria- Jungfrau, as a very new and humble member of our Society on the 1978 Swiss trip, I was startled to find Professor Moriarty in person taking the place beside me. “Ah, good morning” he said to the assembled company, and it sounded like a silken but deadly threat.
