Undershaw, at Hindhead in Surrey, is the house where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles and other classic chronicles of Sherlock Holmes. On Saturday the 17th May – as near to Conan Doyle’s birthday as could be managed – MX Publishing will host a very special evening event there!
In 2016, the school that now bears the name of the house was opened there as “a specialist setting where children from Year 3 to Post 16 with mild to moderate learning difficulties and additional needs, such as ASD, cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, and medical vulnerabilities can access the national curriculum and qualification pathways in a safe, secure, and friendly environment”. And from the beginning, MX Publishing has been a keen supporter of the school and the house.
Over that decade, David Marcum has compiled and edited no fewer than 52 volumes of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories, featuring contributions by… Gretchen Altabef, Hugh Ashton, Derrick Belanger, S F Bennett, Matthew Booth, Peter Calamai, Leslie Charteris & Denis Green, Bert Coules, David Stuart Davies, M J Elliott, Lindsay Faye, Sonia Fetherston, Jim French, Jayantika Ganguly, Kelvin Jones, Andrew Lane, David L Leal, Bonnie MacBird, Julie McKuras, Mark Mower, Orlando Pearson, Christopher Redmond, Tracy J Revels, Joel & Carolyn Senter, Denis O Smith, Nicholas Utechin, Daniel D Victor, Sean M Wright …
and innumerable others, including David Marcum himself.
And none of them has received any money for it, as the books were published specifically to support Undershaw – the school and the building!
To date, the books have raised $135,000 for Undershaw. That’s nearly £102,000!
The event on the 17th May will celebrate the completion of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories. Ten years – 52 volumes – over 1,000 stories and 200 authors!
There’s lots for Holmes and Conan Doyle devotees to enjoy on the livestream: two live Sherlock performances, a fireside chat with the headteacher of Undershaw and several VIP guests including Gyles Brandreth and Sir Stephen Fry. And there’s the Undershaw Auction, which includes lots of generously donated Sherlockian memorabilia, and runs for the month before the event. And of course, all proceeds from this very special event will go to UNDERSHAW SCHOOL. We look forward to seeing you there!
